Grant and Lee: A Study in Personality and Generalship (Hardcover) Major General J.F.C Fuller
If Lee was the greater general, how did Grant win the war?
That's the question J.F.C Fuller set oout to answer when he bagan work on Grant & Lee more than eighty years ago- and his conclusions continue to resonate today. At the time the conventional wisdom was that Lee was indeed the superior leader, abrilliant stategist and tactician. Gran't only advantage, it was thoughtm was in numbers: he had more troops to hurl at his enemy, more men to sacreificem and was called a "butcher".
But as he progressed with his research, FUller decided that the conventional wisdom was wrong. He ends up faulting Lee for lacking an overall strategy and blundering in specific battles, while hailing Grant as the Civil War's true military genius.
